HOPE VALLEY — A 27-year-old Woody Hill Road man is in Rhode Island State Police custody today after a fire in his house where another man was found dead.
At 3:41 a.m., ambulance and police were called to the address and shortly after 4 a.m. Hope Valley, Carolina, Ashaway and Exeter fire departments were on the scene. Hopkinton police department and state police were also on the scene.
Simultaneously, area police departments were alerted that Jared L. Tefft, 27, of 110 Woody Hill Road, was wanted for questioning on charges of a “possible homicide” and was “considered armed and dangerous.”
Departments were told Tefft was in possession of a knife and “to use caution in his apprehension.”
Tefft was arrested at the Cumberland Farms in Richmond by Richmond Police. Meanwhile, the fire was extinguished in about an hour and crime scene investigators and the state fire marshal were called to the scene.
Tefft has a lengthy criminal record, including drug possession charges, according to the Rhode Island Judiciary website.
The Hopkinton building inspector was called to the scene and the building likely will be deemed uninhabitable.
