PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island state lawmaker has been charged with illegally firing a gun outside his Providence nightclub.

WPRO-AM reports that Democratic Rep. Peter Petrarca of Lincoln was arrested early Saturday at Club Karma.

Police say officers heard a gunshot near the club, located at Friendship and Richmond streets. When they got there, they say Petrarca told them he fired the gun and they saw smoke coming from his coat pocket.

It was not clear why he might have fired the gun. No one was hurt.

Petrarca, who is also a lawyer, did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

The club is the former Club Elements, which had its liquor license revoked after problems including a shooting there on New Year’s Eve.

Petrarca and restaurateur Gianfranco Marrocco reopened the club under the new name after agreeing to changes including more security.
